Not long ago, Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez was on a high after scoring two goals against England in the 2014 World Cup. Unfortunately, he marred Uruguay’s run to the knockout round after biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during his side’s 1-0 victory over Italy.
Now Suarez is dealing with the fallout from his actions, which includes being dropped by one of his sponsors, 888 poker. The online poker site released the following statement regarding their decision to dump Suarez:
888poker signed Luis Suarez following a fantastic season for which his achievements were widely recognised. Regrettably, following his actions during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Italy on Tuesday, 888poker has decided to terminate its relationship with Luis Suarez with immediate effect.
888 is certainly spot on by saying that Suarez had a fantastic season. He was a terror in the English Premier League while playing for the Liverpool side. He also led the CONMEBOL (South America) World Cup qualifying stage with 11 goals. This momentum carried on into the 2014 World Cup where, as we mentioned before, he scored twice against England.
Aside from having his deal terminated with 888 poker, Suarez also received a 9-match ban from FIFA as well as a 4-month suspension from all soccer-related activities. This means that he won’t be able to join Liverpool until late October.
If there’s any good news for Suarez, it’s that he hasn’t completely lost his deal with Adidas. However, the popular sporting brand did remove an ad from Copacabana Beach where Suarez’s teeth are showing and he’s making an angry face. Scores of soccer fans were taking pictures by the ad as a joke, which is a big reason why Adidas chose to take it down.
